Aluísio Carvão

Bio

Born in Belém-PA in 1920. Aluisio Carvão was a painter, sculptor, illustrator, actor, set designer, teacher. One of the exponents of Brazilian art from the 2nd half of the 20th century, Carvão moved to Rio at age 21, and in early 1952, he began taking classes with Ivan Serpa at MAM-RJ. The following year, he joins the Grupo Frente, creating strict geometric formal structures, and takes part in the main group exhibitions related to Brazilian concretism.

Statement

Aluísio Carvão's initial concern was with the form: reducing the work to elementary, gestalt structures. From the neoconcrete dissidence, of which he was part, it is the color that will impose itself, involving the structure, or better, the color is the space itself. Through color he reveals his sensual relationship with the world.
