Bio

Geraldo de Barros was a Brazilian painter, photographer and designer. Became associated with the São Paulo based Grupo Ruptura in 1952.He was one of the exponents of vanguard in Brazilian art, a precursor of concrete art and pioneer in abstract photography.He was also active as a furniture designer from the mid 50’s..He was invited to the 1st,2nd,3rd, 9th,15th, 16th and 21st São Paulo biennials.

Statement

De Barros pushed experimental photography to new heights, as he made interventions to the photographic negative: cutting, punching, solarising, and superimposing images with drawing, painting, and other techniques. In the mid-1960s his production approached the pop trend, but in the following decade, he resumed his research started with concrete art, making geometric works with Formica as a support, which allowed their reproduction on a large scale.
