Andrea Alkalay

Bio

Based in Buenos Aires, Andrea Alkalay uses photography as a medium expressive. Graduated in Industrial Design from the University of Buenos Aires, her ideas were always related to form and function, and materials as tools to underline concepts.
She thinks through photography seeking the poetic and political potential that arises from observation by exploring the medium’s ability to manipulate the perception of reality. Another line of research of her practice is travel. The condition of foreigners and displacement is her source of inspiration. She’s interested in the discrepancy between what we see and what we know. Her work is exhibited and awarded internationally.

Statement

Landscape, according to one of its definitions, is the admirable natural space for its artistic/scenographic aspect. We experience it according to our capacity for perception. We see what we know.
She works on the idea of nature as cultural construction and the composition of a new landscape with other readings.
The relationship between photography and landscape is insufficient, considering that the lens cannot capture the experience of having been there. It explores the illusion of the natural landscape and its digital chromatic decomposition by transferring what is captured in one sense (the view) to the codes of another system (RGB).
The series presents a dialogue between figuration / abstraction where the authentic meets the artificial, overlapping.
In the foreground is the monochromatic scenery and in the background, its digitized chromatic representation.
These double photographs combine opposite codes that attract as the perception of color through their absence, or the flatness of paper through the fold. The chromatic ranges are revealed through the pleating of the paper that gives volume breaking the geography with another topography in parallel. They are manual gestures that she uses paying attention to the artifices and the materiality of the photographic object. It underlines the effect of dragging into the terrain of the artificial what is given by the order of the natural.
