Bio

(Padua, 1937) In 1959, together with other architecture students, he founded the Gruppo Enne-A. In 1960 he exhibited at the Azimut Gallery in Milan. That same year he formed the N Group. In 1961 he joined the "Nuove tendenze" movement and, in 1962, he exhibited with the N Group at the Arte programmata exhibition at the Negozio Olivetti in Milan. He has held countless group and solo exhibitions, with iconic group shows such as "Nove Tendencije" in Zagreb and the major exhibition "The responsive eye" at the MoMa in NY. His work has been exhibited at the Museo degli Eremitani in Padua in 1988, at the Venice Biennale in 1995, in the halls of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg in 2006, at the Diocesan Museum of Barcelona in 2007, at the International Triennial of Contemporary Art in Prague in 2008, among others.

Statement

He is one of the main exponents of Italian programmed and kinetic art. His name is linked to the period of maximum popularity of optical-kinetic art, thanks to his artistic creations constructed on the basis of precise optical illusions. His works often feature surfaces that change appearance depending on the angle of observation, thus giving the illusory sensation of movement and creating perceptual effects that vary according to the viewer's movement.
Particularly from the 1960s onwards, the reticular and permeable objects made of perforated paper, the laminar structures superimposed on boards of contrasting colors, his investigations based on classical geometric shapes made with PVC sheets and the light prisms are outstanding in his artistic production.
