Carlos Páez Vilaró

Bio

He is a multifaceted artist who defines himself as a builder of things. He built Casapueblo, a habitable sculpture that was his house, workshop, hotel and current museum of his work. His art, with a strong Afro-descendant influence, helps to make candombe visible as a misunderstood cultural expression in the 40s and 50s. In his work, everyday life is also present with the abstractions of the sun, moon, animals or dances. He leaves indelible marks in his paintings, murals and drawings for dishes, airplanes or sails on the ships of the Navy of his country. He was a free creator who brought his art closer to people. His works are found in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the United States, Haiti, Panama, various places in Africa and Polynesia.
