Lorena Zuluaga

Bio

Visual artist from the National University of Colombia, she specializes
in art direction, animation, and radio, exploring spaces where people
gather to dance, sing, or play. Her work focuses on themes of
commerce, seduction, popular music, and food, depicting stories of
love, heartbreak, migration, and dreams within the context of nighttime
enjoyment. Through scenography, she creates situations that reveal
how we connect through celebration.
She curated the exhibition “ARRUME” at The Clemente Soto Vélez
Center, NYC, in 2023, and has participated in various exhibitions,
including "Salón Arte Joven" at Galería Nueve Ochenta, Bogotá, in
2024, and “Rizoma” at the Museo de Antioquia in 2022. Her
residencies include “EN BLOQUE” in Bogotá and EAC in Montevideo.
She won the Young Women Talent contest in Medellín in 2016 and
received recognition for her thesis project in 2015. Her work “Canción
del día, sobrevivir” has been part of the Museo de Antioquia’s
collection since 2021

Statement

For some time now, I have been particularly interested in gathering
places, especially those where we come together to celebrate or break
from routine—be it bars, cafés, underground parties, or any situation
that highlights how we connect with one another. My childhood was
shaped by December neighborhood parties in Colombia and by family-
owned shops that sold food and liquor. Observing and being present in
these spaces has led me to develop a research practice focused on
spaces, elements, people, and stories, which serves as a foundation
for creating installations, actions, animations, or sound-oriented
proposals. In my recent works, the influence of cinema is evident in
each proposal; I believe that within the complex narrative of discussing
a bar, the space transforms into a stage where the stories that make us
human come to life.
