Manabu Mabu

Bio

Manabu Mabe was a painter, engraver, and illustrator, naturalized Brazilian. Born in Japan on Sept. 14, 1924, he moved to Brazil in 1934. Self-taught painter, his professional work was developed starting from 1946. Mabe executed paintings in an abstract style and vibrant coloring that relate him stylistically with American abstract expressionism's gestural painting and European lyrical abstraction. He participated in the first biennial of young artists held in Paris in 1959.

Statement

Manabu Mabe was one of the pioneers of abstract painting in Brazil. His style was able to combine the immediacy next to both European and American, informalism with vibrant colours and passages of calligraphic quality that bring closer you to the Japanese art.
"Mabe is one of the great masters of painting and may have left the figurative to have no obstacles to communicate the real, and propose the reality of the fantastic."
