He was invited to inaugurate the new “Sala del Artista” at the Museum of Modern Art in Barranquilla. Mojica (Barranquilla, 1976) is an artist who has explored this gray area between humor and critical thinking during the very moment when the Internet began to become popular. His plastic explorations anticipated certain dynamics of the image that today are more “naturalized” in our digital condition.
Statement
Throughout his series entitled “#IsItCake?”, Marco Mojica takes a profound look at the image itself, whether understood as an artistic medium or as a means of communication and mass consumption. Taking inspiration from the eponymous reality show premiered by Netflix in 2022, Mojica leads the ideas of appropriation, representation, transmission and distribution of images to the pictorial field, where he formulates a complex archeological vision of media. Just as in the original reality show the participants must decide whether the image they are confronted with is a real object (a shoe, a hammer or a bicycle) or merely a hyper-realistic representation (is it a cake?), Mojica proposes a game that in a sophisticated way challenges the notions of original and copy, thus questioning that cultural experience we call art.
