Egar Murillo

Bio

Egar Murillo was born in San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina in 1957, but from a young age, he and his family settled in Mendoza, the city where he was raised, academically trained, and currently resides. In 2023, he received the "Premio a la Trayectoria Nacional" (National Lifetime Achievement Award), one of the highest honors bestowed in Argentina to an artist.
Since 1984, he has been a part of the experimental collective "Grupo Poroto." He has participated in significant national and international art fairs and was invited to take part in "El Arte Señala," the Biennial of Argentine Contemporary Art in 2010, and the IV Biennial of the End of the World in 2014-2015. His works are featured in important national and international public and private collections, with pieces housed in prestigious museums in Argentina.

Statement

Egar Murillo's painting carries a strong conceptual and political undertone. Through his works, Murillo engages in the task of questioning and examining society from various perspectives. With a strong punk spirit, he tends to explore and position himself from the ambiguous margins of the system. His works provoke and appeal to the viewer's psychology, exposing hostilities and contradictions in contemporary society from different viewpoints. The recurrent use of discarded materials or items found during urban walks is a common theme in his work.
