Lydia Okumura

Bio

In the 1970s, influenced by the new art movements in Japan and North America, she initiated the first Conceptual Art show in Brazil with fellow students at the SESC Vila Nova in São Paulo. Lydia Okumura was born in 1948 to Japanese parents in São Paulo, Brazil.

Statement

"My interest in art was awakened in the Japanese Schools I frequented in my childhood. At 14, I was sent to learn industrial ceramics, however, I started defining lines or shapes in complex geometry, with colors of flat paint and glazes, exploring the intersection between two and three dimensions, and challenging the possibilities.
