Luiz Aquila

Bio

With an extensive and diverse production since the 60s, Luiz Aquila has participated in over 200 exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, being called ‘the hero of his own painting’. He had taught at the University of Brasilia and at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro, where he had also been the director. As an influence in the 80s’ “New Brazilian Painting”, he had a great retrospective at the National Museum of Fine Arts in 2019.

Statement

The superimpositions of masses of color and transparencies, on vibrant surfaces, whose effect is obtained by the rhythm of the strokes, stand out. “The subject of painting is painting, its own form. It is form and content and motive at the same time. Color is the most direct element. The color is a bit, perhaps, like the rhythm in the song. The color touches you immediately. And I think Brazilian art is sometimes a bit shy in color.”
