Julio Le Parc

Bio

Julio Le Parc is a kinetic painter, draftsman, and printmaker from Argentina. He was born in Mendoza, Argentina, in 1928. In 1942, he moved with his family to Buenos Aires, where he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1958, he received a scholarship to go to France, settling permanently in Paris. His work abandoned traditional painting techniques, and in collaboration with other European and American artists, he founded the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) in 1960.

Statement

Le Parc is globally recognized for his contributions to kinetic and optical art. He is one of the greatest geometric and kinetic artists, making significant innovations in the fields of light, movement, and perception. His works serve as a platform for exploring the boundaries of painting, sculpture, and participatory experiences.
His work, primarily composed of reliefs that integrate light and movement, makes use of phosphorescent liquids, nylon threads, and metal bands moved mechanically. Since 1969, after returning to painting on canvas, he has worked with a range of fourteen strictly defined colors.
