Mauricio Morillas

Bio

I am influenced both by the cultural richness of my hometown of Mexico City as well as the urban landscapes of New York City. Working in mixed media is a constant learning experience, an exploration to discover how unlikely things will react to each other. I want each piece to be a unique vision within an overall minimalist aesthetic.

Statement

Mauricio Morillas creates mixed media compositions that balance natural and organic shapes along with urban and industrial elements. These works are at once minimal and richly textural, sometimes using a muted palette, other times, saturated with bold reds, oranges and blues and then pierced with shining metal hardware. Morillas manages to invoke both the language of light and shadow as essential to his notion of aesthetic simplicity. Hard materials and delicate minutia are balanced and parsed in ways that beg for a recognition of the order he has imposed. The maker is evident but keeps his presence subtle.
