Romulo Aguerre

Bio

Rómulo Aguerre ( May 30, 1919 in Montevideo , Uruguay – November 2002 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan photographer.
Born in the Montevidean Barrio Sur , Aguerre first learned to paint and draw from his uncle, the painter and draftsman Ricardo Aguerre , and was a self-taught photographer. From 1933 he worked for the daily newspaper El Pueblo . He opened his first photo studio in Montevideo's Calle Maldonado in 1934. In 1968 he first set up an art gallery on Calle Colonia in Montevideo, followed two years later by another in Punta del Este .
Aguerre participated almost annually in national and international exhibitions between 1953 and 1988. His works have been shown in Germany , Austria , Belgium , Portugal , Italy , Finland , Spain , Poland , the USA , Argentina and Brazil , among others. He exhibited his works for the first time in 1954 in Montevideo in a solo exhibition. Approximately 20 more solo exhibitions followed, including 50 Años - Retrospectivain 1994, also in his native town. In 1954 he won first prize in the international photographic art competition in San Pablo. In 1957 he received the gold medal at the Primer Salón Rioplatense del Retrato in Buenos Aires. Ten years later, FIAP awarded the EFIAP, Excellence FIAP award . At the 18th National Salon of Plastic Arts in Montevideo he was awarded the Premio Adquisición in 1969, which he also received three years later at the 20th Municipal Salon. In 1977, the Alliance française in Uruguay named him the best of the year in the field of photographyout. The following year he was awarded first prize at the 26th Municipal Salon of Plastic Art in Montevideo. In 1984 he also won first prize in the Plastic Art Competition organized by the Inter-American Development Bank .
Aguerre's works can be found in the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales (MNAV), the Museo Juan Manuel Blanes (MJMB) and the Museo de Artes Plasticas in Buenos Aires , among others .
