Francisco Sobrino

Bio

Francisco Sobrino Ochoa (Guadalajara, 1932 - Brittany, May 11, 2014) 1 was a Spanish sculptor. After graduating from the National School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, he abandoned figuration and began to paint with abstract and geometric shapes. His style begins to focus on investigating light, space and movement, combining flat geometric shapes to achieve virtual movement. At the end of 1959 he left for Paris, where he met with former fellow students: García Rossi, Moyano and Julio Le Parc.
After coming into contact with the artistic movements of the moment in France, he looks especially at the kinetic work of Victor Vasarely as a reference. Together with his colleagues, he founded the GRAV (Groupe de recherche d'Art Visuel or Visual Art Research Group). His work is the object of numerous individual exhibitions, and he is also an integral part of the most outstanding artists at the Tate Gallery, the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Tel Aviv Museum or the Castellana Open Air Sculpture Museum.
On December 12, 2008, the Guadalajara city council signed an agreement with the artist to create a museum that bears his name in the old slaughterhouse of the city.
